De Atari 2600 is een spelcomputer die op 11 september 1977 door Atari, Inc. in Amerika werd uitgebracht. De console heeft het gebruik van microprocessor-gebaseerde hardware en ROM-cartridges met spellen gepopulariseerd. De console werd oorspronkelijk verkocht als de Atari VCS, wat stond voor Video Computer System. Nadat de Atari 5200 in 1982 op de markt kwam, werd de VCS omgedoopt tot de "Atari 2600" naar het Atari onderdeelnummer CX2600. De 2600 werd meestal geleverd met twee joysticks, een paar paddles en één spelcassette, eerst het spel Combat en later Pac-Man.
De processor in de 2600 was de MOS 6507, een uitgeklede versie van de 6502, die op 1,19 MHz draaide. De 6507 had minder geheugenadrespinnen, 13 in plaats van 16, en geen externe interrupts waardoor de processor slechts 28 pins had. Een kleinere processor was een belangrijke factor om de kosten laag te houden en aangezien geheugen in die tijd erg duur was, zou de kleine 8 kB externe geheugenruimte van de 6507 toch niet worden opgebruikt. In feite was het geheugen destijds zo duur dat men zich niet kon voorstellen dat zelfs 4 kB zou worden gebruikt. De spelcomputer heeft slechts 128 bytes intern geheugen en er is geen frame buffer voorhanden, omdat de benodigde RAM te duur zou zijn geweest.
In 1984 werd een vernieuwde versie van de 2600 uitgebracht. De nieuwe herontworpen versie van de 2600, officieus de 2600 Junior genoemd, had een kleinere en goedkopere vorm met een gemoderniseerd Atari 7800-achtig uiterlijk. De vernieuwde 2600 werd aangeprezen als een goedkoop spelsysteem (onder $50) waarmee een grote collectie klassieke spellen kon worden gespeeld.
De Atari 2600 werd in Amerika en Europa verkocht tot 1991 en in Azië tot het begin van de jaren negentig. Het laatste spel dat door Atari zelf werd uitgebracht was KLAX in 1990. In 2007 werd de Atari 2600 opgenomen in de Toy Hall of Fame en was het jongste speelgoed dat werd opgenomen. De Atari 2600 werd 40 miljoen keer verkocht en werd officieel met pensioen gestuurd door Atari Corp. op 1 januari 1992.
